Collections Management and Originating Communities: Preparing collections for Review

There is a growing field of new museology that explores, investigates, and examines collaborative projects through the perspective of curators, conservators, and originating communities. My graduate thesis project explores the role of an absent perspective, the collections manager, using a collection of kachina tihu and kokkos form the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History. A product of this thesis is a guide for collections managers to use when preparing for a tribal review. A short article about this thesis, "Collaborative Museology: The Role of Collections Manager," is published in volume 151 of the Informal Learning Review.

The Ute Indian Museum as Cultural Sovereignty

At the third annual Center for the Native American an Indigenous Studies Annual Graduate Student Research Showcase I presented The Ute Indian Museum as Cultural Sovereignty. This presentation critically analyzed the recently renovated Ute Indian Museum in Montrose, CO. Using indigenous studies epistemology, I discussed the collaborative process, display techniques, and content of the new exhibit.

Preparing Museum Records for Collaboration at History Colorado

While working at History Colorado in the Summers of 2017 and 2018, I assisted the Curator of Archaeology and NAGPRA liaison in preparing museum records and collections for tribal review. This included researching museum documentation and entering relevant information in to Argus. Information was shared during consultation with the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes in the Fall of 2017, and the Comanche Nation in the Summer of 2018.

Commercial Project

I really enjoyed working on this project, one of the bigger ones in the field. It gave me an opportunity to be creative and do things a little outside of the box. I also had to push myself to meet tight deadlines. I’m proud of the work I did on Commercial Project and would love to discuss it with you in more detail.
